How do you support the communities you partner with?

In order to create a truly sustainable business, we believe we must respect and operate harmoniously within the environment and communities we work with. With all of our fragrance we look for opportunities to giveback. This can be in one of three ways (or a combination of givebacks).

Sourcing: We seek to source our signature raw materials from Indigenous and Marginalized communities around the world. In doing so, we ensure that the ingredients are sourced sustainably, with no negative environmental impact and that there is transparency in the supply chain. We pay a premium to ensure that the harvesters and farmers are paid properly for their work. We conduct our own research and we also rely on external agencies and our sourcing partners to validate the transparency of each supply chain.

R&D & Business Support: We also seek to invest back into communities from which we source raw materials. For example, we are currently working with Smallholder Farmers Alliance in Haiti on a new project cultivating Moringa for both a nutritional crop and for its therapeutic oils. We are assisting the Smallholder Farmers Alliance to conduct a market study, seek expertise in extraction and network them with international buyers.

Charitable Giving: In addition to the direct business benefits that we try to deliver to the communities that we work with, directly and through our partners, we also allocate funds to charitable projects within the communities that we work with. For example; part profits of sales of Winter Oak are given to the Chumash Native Americian Museum in Thousand Oaks, California, to enable them to continue to educate visitors about their culture.

Since October 2013, we have created five new Raw Spirit fragrances in collaboration with our production partner, Firmenich, and Firmenich Master Perfumer Harry Fremont.

These fragrances have been introduced as part of Nomad Two Worlds and Firmenich's joint commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative. In the process, the companies will identify and work with Indigenous and marginalized communities in Haiti, the Amazon, Australia and the U.S. to assist in the commercialization of novel ingredients and to help champion and showcase these ingredients to the consumer market.

AUSTRALIA - Supporting Indigenous Agricultural Projects

Our Australian fragrances include unique wild-harvested ingredients. We work with Indigenous communities both directly and indirectly, through our partner Essential Oils of Tasmania, to ensure sustainability and to support Indigenous community projects.

Fire Tree was created in collaboration with Western Australia's Nyoongar community, the traditional guardians of the Fire Tree. The Fire Tree extract was collected from dead Fire Tree fronds as is the traditional practice of the Nyoongar people.

A portion of sales of Fire Tree is reinvested into the wider Nyoongar community via Nomad Two Worlds Foundation.

Part proceeds from Wild Fire (featuring wild-harvested Australian Sandalwood) and Desert Blush (featuring wild-harvested Western Australian Boronia) are used to support sustainable Australian Indigenous agricultural projects in collaboration with our production partner Essential Oils of Tasmania.

HAITI - Supporting Fair Trade Agricultural and Community Projects

Our Haitian inspired fragrances, Citadelle and Bijou Vert, feature premium Haitian Vetiver.

Our production partner Firmenich is engaged in an innovative multi-stakeholder collaboration with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and local organizations to source sustainable Vetiver (a tropical grass used to make fragrant oil) from the Débouchette farming community in Haiti.

As part of this innovative project Firmenich will:

  • Purchase Ecosert ESR (Fair Trade) certified Vetiver. The fair trade premium will enable the Débouchette Vetiver cooperative to implement a variety of community projects.
  • Continue to support education initiatives with Débouchette farming communities.
  • Implement renewable energy initiatives.
  • Implement projects to create economic opportunities for women, addressing the needs and aspirations of women in the Débouchette region.

Part proceeds from Citadelle and Bijou Vert are used to support sustainable Haitian agricultural projects in collaboration with Firmenich.

NORTH AMERICA - Supporting Native American Cultural Projects

Winter Oak is inspired by the Chumash Lands of California, where the Oak Tree figures prominently in the history and the culture of the Chumash people.

Part proceeds from Winter Oak will be used to support the Chumash Indian Museum in Thousand Oaks, California.
